The Perpendicular Poetry Prize is an annual poetry competition run in memory of Clive Gresswell – a much‑loved local journalist and poet. Established by his family, the prize celebrates playful, experimental and unconventional approaches to poetry, encouraging writers to take risks, challenge form and embrace the unusual, absurd and innovative.
This project supports the development of Perpendicular Poems, expanding the award beyond the main prize through a programme of creative activity across Luton. The initiative includes poetry workshops, collaboration with local schools to develop engaging poetry resource packs, and two celebratory events recognising both established and emerging voices.
A key focus of the prize is to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to play with poetry, experiment with form, and discover new ways of expressing ideas. Alongside the main prize, this year also introduces an all‑new Junior Prize, giving young poets the chance to showcase their creativity and be celebrated alongside adult writers.
